Around The Region

Sightseeing in the Languedoc Roussillon is rich and varied, rather like its landscape. This charming region is made up of kilometres of gentle coastline and rugged mountains.

Clean Mediterranean beaches are perfect for lazy days, ranging from traditional fishing villages to new, purpose-built resorts. A more peaceful pace is to be found inland, with acres of vineyards, Cathar Castles, Thermal Spas and mountain walks.

The rich architectural heritage ranges from Roman to Romanesque, contrasting with the modern, vibrant atmosphere of the main cities. This varied canvas makes for a diverse sightseeing experience that will not disappoint.

Pay a visit to the quaint fishing port and Fauvist centre of Collioure, dominated by the Chateau Royal. Within an hour you could be lunching at a quayside restaurant (the town is famous for anchovies) or buying a painting from one of the resident artists. Not to be missed is the Fort de Salses an impressive and well preserved 15th century Catalan stronghold, only 30 minutes from Perpignan. Explore the smaller villages of Ceret and Castlenou nestled in the Eastern Pyrenees or drive the Banyuls ‘cornice’ across the Spanish border for extraordinary coastline and amazing views; just a few ideas to whet your appetite!

“We've had a wonderful holiday in your part of France, visiting some spectacular places”

Further afield, between 1-2 hour’s drive, you can be in the fortified medieval town of Carcassonne one of France’s most popular attractions, or nip over the border and visit the Dali museum in Spain, home to one of the largest collections of his work. Relax and soak in the thermal baths at St Thomas les Bains or enjoy a day at the Sigean African safari park exhibiting around 350 different species. Choosing an inspiring day out is never a problem.

Also, don't forget that this is the largest and oldest wine growing region in France well known for its Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre and Carignan grapes with hundreds of domains offering tastings and opportunities to buy wine direct from the cellar.
